The Portland Timbers are just over the halfway point in their 2025 MLS season, and a new podcast is giving voice to the passion and perspective of their supporters. The Timbers Tally Podcast has launched, and host Andrew Janderson interviews Jeff Sutton, a rabid Timbers supporter who shares his journey to finding the Timbers and what makes the team so memorable for him. The show will focus on fan culture, matchday experiences, and how the club’s performance shapes conversations in the community.

The Timbers were founded in 1975 and have found ways to survive after leagues have collapsed, players moved on, and ownership changed. Their longevity can be attributed to their supporters and passion for the squad. After joining Major League Soccer (MLS) in 2011, the Timbers Army (TA) went on national display. Their rendition of the national anthem before their first match set MLS on notice for what the Army is all about. As loud and boisterous as the TA can be, their silence can be even more impactful. In 2019, MLS cracked down on the iron-front symbol, and the TA and visiting Sounders fans observed 33 minutes of silence to start the match. The demonstration played a big part in MLS reversing their decision to ban the symbol.
Timbers Tally is a nod to both scorekeeping and storytelling. A lot of focus is put on the highs, Portland joining MLS, winning the 2015 Cup, making it to the 2018 and 2021 Cups, and the fantastic atmosphere created by a genuinely independent supporters group, but that does not tell the whole story. The Timbers have had several controversies surrounding their owner, former general manager, and the poor handling of the Riley, Polo, and DaBella situations, to name a few. Long-time supporters have stopped showing up; fans have mixed feelings about their support, and many have said enough is enough. Through first-person experiences of the fans that make the team possible, Timbers Tally will let the fans speak for themselves one episode at a time. The series will be released between matchdays and feature guests from supporter groups, alumni players, and local creatives connected to the club.
